احتج صحافيون يعملون في "نيويورك تايمز"، أمس الأربعاء، على نشر الصحيفة مقال رأي للسيناتور الجمهوري، توم كوتون، بعنوان "انشروا القوات"، معتبرين أن نشر المقال يعرض "الموظفين السود في نيويورك تايمز للخطر".
نُشرت مقالة توم كوتون في قسم المقالات والرأي الذي يعمل منفصلاً عن غرفة الأخبار، لكن الموظفين في القسمين أطلقوا حملة على "تويتر" للاعتراض على النشر، حيثوا كتبوا سلسلة من التغريدات النقدية استخدمت جميعها عنوان المقال وسمًا مرافقا.
وأوضح محرر قسم المقالات، جيمس بينيت، في سلسلة تغريدات أمس الأربعاء، قراره بنشر مقالة كوتون، بقوله إن القسم "يدين لقرائنا بعرض الحجج المضادة، ولا سيما تلك التي يقدمها أشخاص في وضع يسمح لهم بوضع السياسات".
وخلص بينيت إلى القول إنه "يتفهم أن العديد من القراء يجدون أن حجة السيناتور كوتون مؤلمة بل وخطيرة... ونعتقد أن هذا أحد الأسباب التي تتطلب فحص وتدقيق الجمهور".

وانتقدت موظفة سوداء تعمل في صحيفة "نيويورك تايمز"، قرار الصحيفة بنشر مقال يدعو إلى نشر الجيش في أرجاء أميركا بقولها إن "من المحتمل أن أقع في مشاكل، ولكنه من غير الأخلاقي أن لا أتكلم عن الموضوع، بصفتي امرأه سوداء، وصحافية أميركية، أنا أخجل من قرار الصحيفة بنشر هذه المقال".
